Berry was renowned as rock "n" roll's founding guitar hero who defined the music's joy and rebellion in such classics as Johnny B Goode.
Berry's core repertoire was some three dozen songs, his influence incalculable, from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to virtually any group from garage band to arena act that called itself rock 'n roll.
"It started with Chuck Berry". His groundbreaking hit songs, like "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Johnny B. Goode", will continue to live on for generations.
We are deeply saddened to announce that Chuck Berry - beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather - passed away at his home today at the age of 90.
The novelist Stephen King noted that Berry had a long life for a consummate rock'n'roller, tweeting: "Chuck Berry died". The Cadillac in Berry's "Nadine" is not just a Cadillac, but a "coffee colored" Cadillac. "One of the greatest innovators to have lived". "Name any major band - the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith - and they'll have cited Berry as an inspiration".
Considered one of the founding fathers of rock "n" roll, Charles Edward Anderson Berry was present at its infancy in the 1950s and emerged as its first star guitarist and songwriter - a almost 30-year-old black performer whose style electrified young white audiences and was emulated by white performers who came to dominate American popular music. "He was legendary in terms of going from town to town and playing with local musicians when he gets on stage, and, nearly deliberately, would not rehearse with these guys and hide his guitar neck from them when he played and maybe switch keys or just call it a song to keep these musicians on their toes".
Musical stars are paying tribute to Chuck Berry after the influential performer died aged 90.

Emergency responders summoned to Berry's residence on Saturday by his caretaker found him unresponsive, police in Missouri's St Charles County said.
