Standing 24 points from the Championship safety line with eight games to play, they need a victory at home to Fulham to stand a chance of delaying the inevitable and even that may not be enough if Burton Albion, Nottingham Forest and Bristol City all avoid defeat.
They had the flawless incentive on Saturday as the Owls were held to a late draw at Barnsley in the lunchtime kick-off, and this time there was no mistake as Aluko's close-range finish in the 66th minute was enough for the three points which takes them into the play-off spots.
Rotherham interim boss Paul Warne says he is to blame for the club's relegation from the Sky Bet Championship. "We must be focused and concentrate on not making mistakes, and try to win as many points as possible".
However, former midfielder Warne, who made 292 appearances for the clubs as a player, apologised to fans for a "season of poor results".
Relegation has loomed for the Millers as they have failed to win in their last 13 games, where they have only managed to pick up one point.
'Then there was the one in the second half with Tayls (Jon Taylor) when Joe Newell got one-on-one and pulled it back I think he went with his wrong leg.
"Other people have inherited similar situations and have done better".
"I'm the manager that takes them down, it is not exactly great for my ego or self-esteem".
"The performances have been okay at times but we haven't got that strength in depth".
The Millers have gone through two gaffers so far this term, with Warne now in charge as interim manager.
