Samsung launches Galaxy S8 with hope of recovery from Note 7

Samsung will on Wednesday [March 29] hold an event in NY, which will be live-streamed around the world, to launch its flagship Galaxy S8.

A fingerprint scanner is located on the back portion of the device, next to the camera. Its main claim to fame is a bezel-less "Infinity" display.

Users will also find a new digital assistant from Samsung called "Bixby" that's created to compete with similar features from Apple, Google and Microsoft.

The new Samsung Galaxy S8 will come with a 5.8-inch display screen with 1440 x 2960 resolution.

"The Galaxy S8 is arguably the most important launch of the last 10 years for Samsung and every aspect will be under the microscope following the Note 7 recall", commented Ben Wood from the CCS tech consultancy.

The digital assistant dramatically enhances the phone's capabilities allowing for better navigation of applications and also makes it function as a remote control for connected home devices. Instead of entering a 4-digit pin or a fingerprint, users can just hold their device up to their face to unlock the phone.

You can get your hands on this phone today, as it is available to pre-order.

Already, though, the Galaxy S8 isn't off to the best of starts, as it seems that one of its key security features may not be quite as secure as the company implied.

Samsung Electronics Co. showcased both devices in NY and London. There are no new camera modes to the Galaxy S8, however, you'll see all the usual interface which includes a Selective focus mode just like iPhone 7's, Portrait mode, Panorama mode, and Hyperlapse mode.

A Samsung spokeswoman said: "All Bixby functionality, bar the Voice Function, will be available to United Kingdom customers at launch".

As the top-line handsets for the world's biggest smartphone vendor, the Galaxy S8 models will challenge the latest Apple iPhones.
