Pence confirms discussions about Israel embassy move to Jerusalem

After almost a decade of butting heads with Barack Obama, Netanyahu could finally see eye-to-eye with Donald Trump.

He also expressed confidence in a US-Israeli partnership for preventing Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon, following its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, and for "confronting Iran's aggression in the region".

The Trump administration also said it would relocate its embassy to Jerusalem in a move that would further embolden the Israeli government to keep the occupation and push for West Bank annexation.

"So anyone who says you can't get anything done at the United Nations", she said, "they need to know there's a new sheriff in town".

He praised Trump's envoy to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, for "standing up for what's right" at the body.

On that matter, Obama and Netanyahu struggled to speak with a unified voice.

The report called on the worldwide community to prevent and punish instances of apartheid and caused outrage in both the USA and Israel before being withdrawn by the UN.

"I wear heels", Haley concluded her fiery address, "It's not for a fashion statement". Instead, he endorsed AIPAC-backed bipartisan legislation that would increase non-nuclear-related sanctions on Iran for testing nuclear missiles and backing terrorism and other disruptive activity.

It is making for an unusual American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference, one relieved of the strains that marked the last years of President Barack Obama's tenure but also filled with significant uncertainty.

Reps. Kay Granger, R-Texas, a moderate Republican who is the chairwoman of the foreign operations subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee, and Rep. Nita Lowey, the ranking Democrat on the subcommittee and on the committee, have worked together on foreign assistance for years. In mid-March, the U.S. budget introduced major cuts but urged a boost to military spending and recommended leaving the multi-million aid package to Israel intact.

He lingered on what he called the mutual goal of the United States and Israel to defeat militant Islam, which he called a battle between modernity and medievalism. Saying that if you have our back, we're going to have the backs of our friends, but our friends need to have our backs too, " Haley said.

"David, I look forward to welcoming you warmly to Israel and especially to Jerusalem", he said, speaking by videolink to pass a message to the ambassador and his supporters.

"To the extent that Israel (aid) is a larger and larger focus, it will raise controversy", he said.
