While Zverev pushed Rafael Nadal to an epic five-set match at the 2017 Australian Open, Kyrgios has produced flashes of a future multi-time Grand Slam champion, albeit letting his emotions get the better of him on several occasions.
Zverev won 26 of the 36 points played in the final set.
While Kyrgios registered a 6-4, 6-7 (9-11), 6-3 win over 19-year-old German Alexander Zverev in the last-eight clash, Federer struggled past 10th seed Berdych 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6) to book his place in the semi-finals.
Kyrgios also hit 34 winners to 21, including a between-the-legs shot to win a point in the opening game of the second set. The fifth seed was shockingly broken at love attempting to serve out the match at 5-3 and couldn't convert on a match point at 5-4 after Berdych erased it with a gutsy 120mph second serve down the T to Federer's forehand.
Spain's Rafael Nadal also progressed as he defeated France's Nicholas Mahut 6-4, 7-6.
But Berdych, who has struggled to close out the great players throughout his career, squandered the first match point on a forehand error before Federer evened the tie-breaker at 6-6 with a service victor.
Federer will face the victor of the late match between Alexander Zverev and Nick Kyrgios for a place in Miami Open finale. Kyrgios leads the FedEx ATPHead2Head with Federer 1-0, prevailing on the clay courts of Madrid in 2015 in a third-set tie-break. Addressing the resurgence of both him and Federer this season, Nadal said, "It's a good start of the year, I think, for both of us". Federer gets Wednesday off, and will meet 10th-seeded Tomas Berdych on Thursday in the quarters.
Holding a 3-2 advantage, Federer scored a huge break of serve to go up 4-2 and put himself in ideal position to close out the match. "Then you have to be careful, I think, as you grow older, not to play too conservative when it matters".
Federer has won all seven of the tiebreaks he has faced during his current American campaign. Berdych broke to go 5-3 up and took the contest into a third set, where Federer made the most of some unforced errors from his opponent to break at 4-2 but then, uncharacteristically, Federer let some sloppiness creep into his game.
Roger Federer produced another dazzling performance on Monday, easing past Juan Martin del Potro in the third round at the Miami Open.
But Federer held on and was handed the victory when Berdych double faulted.
Federer is targeting another final against Nadal, who faces Italy's Fabio Fognini in the other semifinal.
