Xi was invited by Trump to take part in meetings at his Florida club, Mar-a-Lago, on April 6 and April 7, foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said Thursday. It will be the first in-person meeting between the two.
"Xi's visit is of great historical significance to the development of China-U.S. ties, as the two heads of state will chart the direction of the relationship from the top level, sending a positive signal to the world", said Su Ge, head of the China Institute of International Studies. For his part, Tillerson noted the need for the two countries to maintain close cooperation and coordination due to the changing global situation, and called to implement the agreements signed by the leaders to further boost cooperation in the spirit of no conflicts, no confrontation, mutual respect and mutually beneficially reciprocity. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will host Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at a dinner on April 6.
However, in a conciliatory phone call in mid-February, the USA president walked back controversial comments on Taiwan, creating an opening for Washington and Beijing to discuss a meeting.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will also be in attendance at the meeting, according to reports.
This will be the first meeting between Xi and Trump since Trump assumed office in January.
Xi will be the second foreign leader to be invited to the Florida resort. Last month, Trump hosted Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the Palm Beach resort after a White House summit, and they played golf together.
But in a conciliatory phone call in mid-February, the USA president walked back controversial comments on Taiwan, creating an opening for Washington and Beijing to discuss a meeting. "There are big issues of national, economic, security that need to get addressed", he said.
During his election campaign, Trump accused China of unfair trade policies, criticized its island-building in the strategic South China Sea, and accused it of doing too little to constrain North Korea.
"We expect the visit will achieve remarkable results, further strengthen political trust and substantial cooperation in various areas to inject new vitality to China-Finland relations", he said.
