Xi said. President Xi also invited President Trump to pay a visit to China.
He said issues related to the disputed South China Sea where Trump administration has criticised Beijing's island building were also discussed.
"We renewed our determination to work together to convince the North Korean government to choose a better path and different future for its people", Mr. Tillerson said.
"The United States and China are the world's two largest economies, and we must both promote stability and growth".
While some analysts said the repetition of China's own vocabulary represented acquiescence to its aims, it is possible that Tillerson was merely softening the ground ahead of what are likely to be more decisive talks between the two countries' leaders.
Bonnie Glaser of the Washington-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies said Tillerson's visit was unlikely to dispel deep-rooted mistrust between the two nations.
"We know that through further dialogue, we will achieve a greater understanding that will lead to a strengthening of ties between China and the United States, and set the tone for our future relationship for cooperation", Tillerson said.
China has been North Korea's biggest backer, but relations between the two countries have been strained as the North continues to pursue the development of nuclear weapons. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Tillerson pledged to "make a course-correction" in North Korea with the help of China.
In South Korea on Friday, he said a USA military response would be on the table if North Korea threatened South Korea or United States forces.
There was no mention of contentious issues like North Korea's missile and nuclear programmes, or the status of Taiwan, which China claims as its own.
It was Tillerson's first visit to China since he assumed office last month. He said that the U.S. and China share the view that tensions on the Korean Peninsula are very high and that the situation has reached quite a unsafe level.
Wang said that problems must be resolved using peaceful and diplomatic means regardless of the situation, which was a tactful contradiction of Tillerson's reference to military action against North Korea the previous day.
"We will work together to see if we can not bring the government in Pyongyang to a place where they want to make a different course, make a course correction, and move away from the development of nuclear weapons".
China is being pressed by the USA to implement sanctions against North Korea.
