Samsung unveils Galaxy S8 smartphone

Because there isn't enough madness in the world already, T-Mobile has teamed up with Samsung to do an underwater Galaxy S8 unboxing video surrounded by sharks. The first thing you do is you take your phone and you see the lock screen - with face recognition, there are no other steps.

In what appears as a tight slap for all the users of Windows Phone, Samsung proudly announced that Microsoft has optimized its entire suite of Office apps for DeX.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is officially the first ever phone to release with Bluetooth 5.0 technology. While S8 has most specs similar to iPhone 10/X (at ~15-25% lower price), suggesting a trend of smartphones becoming less differentiated, we note that AAPL is never winning on specs.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is a massive phone.

Even basic navigation felt cumbersome as a result.

The Galaxy S8 now features Samsung's very own digital assistant called Bixby which the company unveiled earlier this month. While it is a cool feature, and can be used to check notifications when your phone is lying flat on a surface, it doesn't serve much of a objective yet as the fingerprint scanner has been moved to the back.

The smartphone is a more compact device than the S8 Plus that is easier to operate with one hand.

Samsung's Bixby intelligent assistant can be activated using a dedicated button on the side of the handsets, and at launch Bixby can be used with 10 built-in apps including messaging and weather. Samsung didn't demonstrate how it worked, so there's no clear sense yet of how this will happen. I'll come back to Bixby's unfinished qualities later.

The 12-megapixel camera sensor on the back panel of the deivce is still one of the best in the market, offering speedy snaps and great performance in low light conditions.

If you're in the United Kingdom, and parts of Asia however, the Galaxy S8 and S8+ come with Samsung's Exynos 8895 processor. For instance, you can point the camera at a building in a city, and it will tell you which one it is and give you info about nearby spots where you can find dinner. Combined with the iris scanner, users now have two reasons not to use the fingerprint scanner that's badly placed (more below).
