New York Mets' Steven Matz Won't Be on Opening Day Roster

He'll be followed in the rotation by Jacob deGrom and Matt Harvey. I waited until someone told me. For two years, we've talked about this rotation, and if we could keep them healthy, we're second to none. I was really happy because I had a good spring.

With Matz ailing, the Mets will have to shuffle their starting rotation.

"We worked about as hard as I ever had to work to worry about health", Collins said of his approach to the spring. The long-haired righty with the power sinker helped save a depleted pitching staff down the stretch last season, going 4-2 with a 2.42 ERA in eight games (seven starts).

Noah Syndergaard will get the ball on Opening Day, which is Monday, at home against the Braves.

Josh Smoker and Josh Edgin also earned roster spots, giving the club three left-handed relievers along with Jerry Blevins. They've both been mentioned when talk turns to fifth starter Zack Wheeler, who had Tommy John surgery in 2015 and is still working his way back into form. Wheeler competed for a spot in spring training and impressed team executives in limited time. "My family is 100 percent behind me, regardless of what happened". Seth Lugo and Rafael Montero are both heading to NY for Friday's exhibition game, pitching for the longman spot in the bullpen. Lugo was impressive in the WBC while Montero was outstanding in the Grapefruit League.

In ancient Rome, when gladiators arrived triumphantly from war, there would always be two things awaiting their return: a large celebration, the masses welcoming and thanking them for their heroics; and a slave who would accompany them on that day, sit in their chariot, and continually whisper in their ear: "Remember, thou art mortal". As previously reported by NJ Advance Media, they will both break camp with the team and head to NY, but one will be sent to Triple-A to stretch out as an emergency starter.

The Mets are not exasperated at the oft-injured Matz's current ailment — the team wants him to pitch on Thursday — but Collins said they will continue to try and get a feel for their lone southpaw starter. The loser will be sent down to Triple-A Las Vegas.
