Man Utd Reportedly Planning Summer Move for Tottenham's £40m Rated Eric Dier

The 23-year-old is reportedly seen by Jose Mourinho as a replacement for Michael Carrick as the Portuguese boss looks to overhaul the Red Devils' squad this summer.

Dier has already racked up 171 club appearances in his career, 91 of which have come in the Premier League, and with 17 caps for England, four of which coming during their ill-fated Euro 2016 campaign, he has already played in some big matches, big occasions, and big moments. Dier has been forced to play at centre-back for Spurs this season, but prefers playing as a holding midfielder.

The Premier League giants are ready to back their manager to splash the cash in the upcoming transfer window.

He immediately became a key figure in Spurs' squad, and is now a cornerstone in Mauricio Pochettino's midfield. My first game in charge at West Ham, he started as a centre-back, in which he scored [in a 1-0 win].

That said, opting for Dier at this exact time would be a questionable decision: the midfielder - especially during Spurs' laughable European exploits - has failed to produce his usual poise and vision this season, losing his place in the starting XI to Victor Wanyama as a result. "In the summer [2015], we were looking for a midfielder and we had plenty of options but I made a decision to play him in midfield", Pochettino explained.

"I created a system that he [Dier] felt comfortable in", Pochettino explained.

"People say now Chelsea changed the system". "Without the ball he tried to press and play as a midfielder".

"Then we signed [Victor] Wanyama and both played, but we had some injuries like Toby [Alderweireld] and Jan [Vertonghen], and Eric was the ideal player to play as a centre back". "The possibility to play in different positions and doing well in every one".
