Israel Approves Settlements For First Time In 25 Years

The unanimous vote will rehouse settlers from Amona - an outpost first declared illegal under Israeli law in 2006 - to an area called Emek Shilo.
Until today, Israel has continued to misappropriate Palestinian land in the West Bank - on which it has steadily continued to build Jewish-only settlements - in breach of worldwide law.

And for the nth time Israel has ignored demands by the worldwide community to halt its illegal settlement building activity in occupied Palestinian territories. Their houses were razed after Israel's Supreme Court said they were built without government approval on privately owned Palestinian land.
"In light of the decisions and despite specific limitations, the understandings reached between the Israeli government and the USA government will enable the continuation of settlement construction in all settlements in Judea and Samaria, and also the establishment of the new settlement for the residents of Amona", a statement issued by the council read.
Ghassan Khatib, a political scientist at Birzeit University, called the Israeli cabinet's decision "a very risky development" and "a major step on behalf of Israel towards closing the historic opportunity" of a two-state solution.
A new settlement would be the first built in the West Bank since 1999.
The Palestinians and the United Nations on Friday condemned the Israeli cabinet's decision, expressing "alarm" at the decision.
Most countries view Israeli settlement activity as illegal and an obstacle to peace.
"As the administration has made clear: While the existence of settlements is not in itself an impediment to peace, further unrestrained settlement activity does not help advance peace", the official said.
The security cabinet voted unanimously in favour of the construction of a new settlement north of the Palestinian city of Ramallah.
About 400,000 Israeli settlers live in the West Bank which is also home to 2.8 million Palestinians.
Netanyahu said he was following through on a pledge he made a few weeks ago to 40 settler families who were evacuated from the illegal hilltop outpost of Amona. "The United States welcomes this".
Over the past two decades, the worldwide community has overwhelmingly backed the idea of a two-state solution as the best way of reaching peace in the region.
Palestinians want the West Bank as part of a future independent Palestinians state, with East Jerusalem al-Quds as its capital.
UNSC Resolution 2334 passed after the USA abstained from voting.
