Each EU State Made Concessions to Agree on Rome Declaration

The Unite for Europe March started nearly simultaneously with another meeting in Italy's capital Rome where the leaders of 27 remaining states of the bloc signed a declaration of unity.

"We will act together, at different paces and intensity where necessary, while moving in the same direction", said the Rome Declaration signed by the 27 nations.

European Council President Donald Tusk said he will present the draft Brexit guidelines to the 27 nations that will remain in the alliance within 48 hours of the triggering of Article 50.

Luxemburger Jean-Claude Juncker, the European Union chief executive, recalled his father's forced service in the World War Two German army; Donald Tusk, the summit chairman, born in Gdansk a month after the Treaty was signed, remembered growing up in the ruins of war and yearning for freedom behind the Iron Curtain.

"Europe as a political entity will either be united, or will not be at all".

Many are deeply unhappy with May's plans to leave the EU's single market in order to cut immigration, and in particular her refusal to guarantee the rights of three million Europeans living in Britain. "But in our case, we have a unique set of circumstances, they are very particular and specific to Ireland and I want that reflected in the language setting out the negotiations", he said.

European Union leaders see the anniversary as a moment to look back on the collective achievements and discuss the future of Europe.

Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo, fresh from a bitter row over former premier Tusk's re-election as European Union chief, only agreed to sign at the last minute due to objections over the reference to a "multi-speed" Europe.

"Where generations longed to see the fall of those signs of forced hostility, these days we debate how to keep out the "dangers" of our time, beginning with the long file of women, men and children fleeing war and poverty, seeking only a future for themselves and their loved ones", he said.

"We have to persuade those who feel as we do to make themselves heard, not to be cowed by the bullying and intimidation of the Brextremist lie machine papers and not to be fooled by the sense of inevitability Mrs".

She has advocated a "clean break" but has also said she wants an "implementation phase" to keep the status quo between Britain leaving the European Union and any new arrangement to allow her country to adapt.

Demonstrators marched through the streets with banners saying, "Our Europe", and "Europe For All".

"The Europe of different speeds does not in any way mean that it is not a common Europe", Ms Merkel said after the ceremony.
