Women's Sweet 16 roundup: OR stuns Maryland; UConn tops UCLA

During Oregon's shootaround - before its 74-60 win over Kansas on Saturday night vaulted the Ducks into the Final Four - Miller held court with several players, including Dorsey, Dillon Brooks and Jordan Bell, who had approached Miller just to talk.

OR was picked to make the Final Four in 11 percent of brackets.

The Jayhawks shot just 35 percent and were unable to overcome an 11-point halftime deficit.

No. 3 OR was able to hang on for a 74-60 win over No. 1 Kansas on Saturday night.

OR advances to the Final Four and a matchup with either No. 1 seed North Carolina (30-7) or No. 2 Kentucky (32-5), with the two teams playing at 4:05 p.m. Sunday in the South Regional final at FedExForum in Memphis, Tenn.

Kaela Davis, A'ja Wilson and top-seeded SC overpowered the upstarts from the opening tip, scoring the first 16 points and advancing to the Stockton, Calif., Regional final by beating the 12th-seeded Bobcats.

On Monday the Ducks women's team must also beat the number-one seed, University of CT, to advance to the Final Four.

Following No. 1 Kansas' 74-60 loss to No. 3 OR in Saturday night's Midwest Region final, Self now is 2-7 all-time in the Elite Eight. The Jayhawks were under 30 percent from the floor in the second half and timidly put up shots with Bell in the area.

Dorsey finished the half with back-to-back threes, including a deep bank shot at the buzzer, as the Ducks pranced to their locker room celebrating a 44-33 advantage. He is the eighth player in college basketball to record 12 or more rebounds for four straight tournament games, joining the likes of Shaquille O'Neal, Tim Duncan and Blake Griffin, among others.

"I want to thank all the guys that were with us here seven years ago", said Oregon Head Coach Dana Altman referring to his seven years at Oregon. North Carolina's Roy Williams will be coaching in his ninth Final Four in Phoenix. Tyler Dorsey, er, "Mr. March", had scoring outputs of 24, 27 and 20 through the Ducks' first three games, and he then poured in 27 as OR dismantled Kansas 74-60. Florida State (28-6) had 16 steals total, and Slaughter also contributed 11 points and eight rebounds. OR did it without one of their key big men - who was injured before the tournament began - and made it look relatively easy, too.

He also had 11 points and 13 rebounds on Saturday after going for 17 points and 13 boards against MI.

The defeat brought an end to the brilliant collegiate career of Mason (21 points on 8-for-20 shooting), who got little help from Jackson (10 points on 3-for-8 shooting), Devonte' Graham (three points on 0-for-7 shooting) or Landen Lucas (nine points and three rebounds).

Lucas and Mason leave Kansas as two of the most appreciated players in recent memory, partly due to their status as seniors in an era that has been dominated by early departures and transfers and partly because of the paths they took to prominence.

Oh, at the end, KU managed to make it interesting, pulling within 66-60 on a trey by Svi Mykhailiuk with 2:50 left. We will go a week without football, because if there was ever a time to do it - a Final Four week is it!

Brooks was the PAC-12 Player of the Year, and hit a variety of hard shots - as he usually does - on his way to a 17-point night. It hurts more to see guys around me.

The tension in the game elevated quickly, as Jackson picked up his second foul of the half - and second in 17 seconds - with 17:23 left in the first half. Still, it was an overwhelmingly successful season for the Ducks, who knew they would be returning just about every key player from that team for 2016-17. "Gonzaga has been a great program and we're just happy to keep carrying the torch". The Zags found the range early against Xavier, hitting 8 of 13 from the arc in the first half, mostly against the Musketeers' zone or on kick-outs from center Przemek Karnowski.
