James Harris Jackson's family issued a statement Thursday through a lawyer.
Thursday, Jackson's second degree murder charged was upgraded to murder as a hate crime. Police were able to recover the sword used to kill Caughman, as well as video evidence that seemed to corroborate Jackson's account. He had been captured on CCTV footage near the crime scene. The Monday prior, Jackson wandered the streets of Midtown Manhattan, his 26-inch sword concealed with an overcoat when he encountered Caughman and stabbed him repeatedly.
He was a fighter, but instead of focusing on that, the mainstream media responded by digging up the victim's old and irrelevant criminal record and referring to the murderer as an Army vet, instead of, you know, a white supremacist who took an innocent life.
Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi said at the hearing that terrorism charges could be added. His profile picture shows him standing happily next to Beyoncé, his arm tucked around her.
Shortly after, he walked into a nearby precinct and turned himself in. Born in Jamaica, Queens to a pastor and home health care aid, Caughman enjoyed lengthy conversations at local diners, and collected bottles and cans, in part to cover his rent at the Barbour Hotel on West 36th Street, a transitional housing facility (Caughman was one of a few permanent residents). He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Jackson is now being charged with second-degree murder but police are working to "add a hate crime or racially motivated crime" in order to make the charge that of first-degree murder.
"My son is 17 years old, and his name is Tamir", Sarsour said.
Police confiscated the computer and his cell phone, but were waiting for a search warrant to examine them. Police say he told investigators he traveled to NY to attack blacks. He had two knives on him, and told cops that the sword and its sheath were inside a trash bag left in a Washington Square Park garbage can. "I don't care if you're the richest man in the world, or the poorest man in the world". "I've got the knife in my coat".
"I'm the person that you're looking for", he told police, according to Aubrey.
Prosecutors believe Jackson's hatred for blacks stemmed from prior to his days to having served in the military.
Jackson ended up serving a little more than three years with the Army, bouncing from Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri to Fort Huachuca in Arizona before a tour in Afghanistan from December 2010 to November 2011, Army officials said.
'He was absolutely anti-social, ' Dagan said. One such selfie has him shaking hands with rapper/singer Wyclef Jean.
In a statement Mayor Bill de Blasio called the crime an "unspeakable human tragedy" and "an assault on what makes [New York] the greatest city in the world: our inclusivness and our diversity".
