Union hockey's Mike Vecchione named Hobey Baker finalist

This year's Hobey Baker Award victor will be announced Friday, April 7, 2017 from the Aon Grand Ballroom at Navy Pier in Chicago, Ill. during the NCAA Frozen Four.

Will Butcher is the first defenseman to be named to the award since 2009, but he's certainly done his part to earn it.

The ECAC Player of the Year was a finalist for the ECACH best defensive forward and was also named first-team all-conference.

The other finalists are Northeastern forward Zach Aston-Reese and Union forward Mike Vecchione. "I'm extremely proud to represent Union in Chicago". He tied Aston-Reese to lead the NCAA Division I in scoring with 63 points, and came in just shy of him in goals with 29.

This season, the Staten Island, N.Y., native had 31 goals and 63 points, both first in the NCAA this season. Colorado's fifth-round draft choice in 2013.

All three are seniors and Hobey Baker Award finalists.

Butcher has been the leader of the Pioneers in their impressive run to the Frozen Four.

29 goals, 34 assists in 38 games. won 61.8 percent of face-offs, fourth in nation. led nation with 21 multiple-point games and 7 game-winning goals. tied for first in nation 1.66 points per game. spearheaded effort to serve Thanksgiving meals at local YMCA.

The Hobey Baker High School Character Award was established in 2003 to honor high school hockey players who exemplify the Hobey Baker ideal that "Character Builds Excellence".

The three finalists were selected from the initial list of 10 candidates by the 27-member Selection Committee and an additional round of online fan balloting to determine this year's Hobey Baker victor. He also was the captain of the nation's No. 1 team.
