With Chelsea seemingly running away with the title, the objective for City and Liverpool is to finish in the top four and this result kept the teams in the last two Champions League qualifying places.
There were two other happy managers following a thrilling 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium, where James Milner's seventh penalty of the season - this one against his former club - was cancelled out by Sergio Aguero's equaliser. "I am so proud", Guardiola told reporters.
Liverpool also face one of their biggest games of the season at the start of next month, the Merseyside derby at home to Everton, and will be equally relieved not to have gone into the break brooding on a defeat. "They put absolutely everything that they had on the pitch". It is one of happiest days of my career as a manager. The draw left them third in the Premier League table still a point ahead of Liverpool, who have played a game more.
City's equalizer was slickly executed, with Kevin De Bruyne delivering a teasing low cross from the right that Aguero tucked home from just outside the six-yard box.
"It was hard. In the end we were better and deserved to win", Pochettino said.
"John Stones has more balls than everyone here", said Guardiola.
A penalty was always likely in this game played on a slick surface after pre-match rain because of the last-ditch defending on show.
Both sides spurned gilt-edged chances to win a classic encounter, with Adam Lallana miss-kicking in front of a near-open goal late on and Aguero twice missing the target in the dying minutes. "I think I made them feel important and trusted", United boss Jose Mourinho said.
" Adam said "sorry" to me and I thought 'why?' - but now I know why he thought he had to say sorry".
"But in this condition, out of the Champions League and playing against Liverpool, one of the top teams, how we played against their counter-attacking with [Roberto] Firmino and [Sadio] Mane, exceptional players, how we played with our character after two or three days means a lot". I can not change it. Both teams missed their fair chance of sitters and both teams played hard.
"It was intense, we defended well. But of course it's good if you get a point in a game like this". Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "There is one outstanding side this year and they will be champions probably, that's then well deserved, and all the rest fights with all they have for the Champions League". It was good and we can build on the performance. "If we do it, that's a success, and if we don't we will be disappointed but we will not stop working or believing in this project".
