Virat Kohli should play if team management wants him: Sunil Gavaskar

Virat Kohli is yet to give up hope of playing the Test series decider against Australia, but India's injured captain remains in huge doubt based on what he said and did on Friday.

Uncapped Mumbai batsman Shreyas Iyer flew in on Friday as cover for Kohli who has been rather subdued in the series, managing 46 runs in five innings. "I will take the field only if I am 100 per cent fit", Kohli said at a press briefing. "The same process applies for me as it does all the other members of the team".

Kohli has hurt his right shoulder during the third test match in Ranchi in an attempt to save some runs at the boundary.

"Risks, yeah, the physio can explain that better", Kohli said.

"(But also) I'm glad he's got a bit of me in his captaincy", said Waugh. "I know they are going to spend a lot of time together in the IPL, so I am sure if it doesn't happen after Dharamsala Test, it will happen during the IPL", Sutherland said.

Kohli did take to the nets on Friday, but was only given gentle throwdowns before spending the rest of the training session talking to his team-mates. "@BCCI compromised the integrity of their #TeamIndia Capt @imVkohli & didn't stand by their players & team", he said.

While Indian top order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara refused to give much importance to the pitch of Dharamsala, Kohli said that he would benefit both batting and bowling unit and players would get rewards for disciplined cricket. We want to take heart from it and forward into the game he said.

"For a guy that's only played a handful of Tests, to go out there and just play his game and back what he's worked on over the last few weeks has been wonderful". It is an exciting time for this team.

"They've been expected to win this series and they now come into this Test match with the possibility of losing it", Waugh said. "Since then, I have been playing this format and I think the experience [of] playing in the domestic circuit and working hard day in, day out, is paying off now". While batting, there is no problem whatsoever of it getting aggravated.

"Everyone's really proud and motivated to play for the country, and me playing or not playing shouldn't make so much of a difference to the other ten guys because they have a responsibility to fulfil as well". Probably not quite as emotional, but no, look, I think he understands the game really well. I've been fortunate to play a fair bit of cricket with Ajinkya and I think he rates and understands the game really well. "The way we came back in Bengaluru and Ranchi, that big partnership has so far been the takeaways". Though Kohli managed to bat in his usual No. 4 spot, the Indian captain hasn't been medically cleared for the fourth Test starting Saturday.
