Rouhani says cooperation with Russian Federation effective

"We have maintained diplomatic relations for more than 500 years", Putin said as he began talks with Iran's visiting President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday.

Iran and Russian Federation will sign numerous cooperation documents during the upcoming visit of President Hassan Rouhani to Moscow, a presidential official was quoted as saying by semi-official ISNA news agency.

Economic ties have developed in parallel: bilateral trade almost doubled between January 2016 and January 2017, according to a statement by the Russian Ministry of Economic Development cited by the Sputnik news agency.

Last August, Russia announced that its planes had used a base in western Iran to carry out counter-terrorism air raids in Syria.

Russian Federation is to build nine of Iran's 20 nuclear reactors in the coming years and has also emerged as a long-term arms partner for Iran, supplying Tehran with the S-300 air defence system.

Iran is "playing a key role in Putin's longer-term strategy to become a major player in the Middle East", he added.

Zarif said that regional issues, including Syria, would be discussed at a meeting in the Kremlin with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Russia's political, economic and military alliance with Tehran made it a unique mediator between Iran and Saudi Arabia, to lead them to a point that is beneficial to both, and also to Russia", Tabatabaei said.

Rouhani - accompanied by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh and other high-ranking officials - is expected to sign more than 10 economic cooperation agreements with Russian Federation, according to Iranian state media.
