That changed this week during a chance encounter with a very big gator on the golf links. In the video, the gator slowly makes its way across the fairway as golfers stand in the distance.
Golfers at all Kiawah Island courses are used to seeing alligators, albeit not all so massive, while teeing off.
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (AP) Carrie Moores says she'd only seen alligators at the zoo before relocating a year ago from CT to SC.
A huge alligator disrupted a golf tournament in SC this week.
'It was literally a dinosaur. It's unknown if it may be the same alligator.
Moores, marketing and communications specialist for the Barrier Island Free Medical Clinic, was taking photos of the oblivious golfers when the gator approached, and a second photo shows the men fleeing into their golf carts after being alerted by the photographer. "People said it was one of the largest ones they had ever seen", Moores said. "I quickly snapped the photo, then ran back to the person who was driving a golf cart for me to see if she knew what the protocol was for an alligator on the golf course", Moores said.
The tournament raised money for the Barrier Islands Clinic, which helps provide health and wellness needs for low-income adults.
