Severe Weather Awareness Week: Severe thunderstorms

Parts of McNairy and Hardin counties in Tennessee were under a Tornado Warning Monday afternoon, as well as Alcorn and Tippah counties in Mississippi.

Weather service officials have not specified the strength of the tornado. It likely had winds between 100-110 miles per hour.

It may seem like a bit much to go to shelter for a severe thunderstorm, since they happen more often.

When you hear of a "severe thunderstorm watch", it means there is the potential for severe weather in the coming hours. Hail damage to vehicles is expected.

We're a week into spring now and with the change of seasons, Iowans know it also means changing weather and sometimes, severe weather. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Severe Weather Awareness Week, which runs through Friday, will include the National Weather Service issuing a tornado watch at 10 a.m. Wednesday for Douglas and Pottawattamie Counties and a tornado warning at 10:30 a.m.

Nebraska Severe Awareness Week is created to remind residents that severe weather season is beginning and residents all need to take steps to be ready, by making a safety plan and reviewing proper safety precautions for protecting their lives.
