Carolina Hurricanes goalie Eddie Lack stopped 23 shots Monday night before allowing an overtime goal in a 4-3 loss to the visiting Detroit Red Wings.
Athanasiou's pass through the neutral zone set up Mantha for his 17th of the season, a backhand between Lack's pads to make it 2-1 at 10:14. He has a 2.48 goals-against average and a 2.48 save percentage. Detroit, which also faces the Hurricanes on Tuesday, is in the midst of playing three games in as many days.
Mantha split the Carolina defense after the puck squirted through both defenders, and beat Lack with a shot from the hashmarks, for his 16th goal.
Athanasiou was pushed into Lack by Victor Rask as the Red Wings' forward was breaking away to the net.
It's tough to beat a team twice in as many days, especially when both games are on the road, but I was burned by the Hurricanes yesterday and this plus money is getting a little insane.
Petr Mrazek made 39 saves for the Red Wings (31-32-12), who are 5-1-1 in their past seven games. Carolina is 7-0-4 in its past 11.
But the Red Wings were re-energized in the third period.
Lack has missed time this season with two separate concussions.
But Faulk tied it 2-2 with his 15th goal with only 57.5 seconds left in the period, tying the game.
And he did it in just 70 seconds.
A shaky Hurricanes change, along with a turnover, enabled Mantha to get free from the blue line in.
The Red Wings appeared to be gaining momentum, in the process, killing Carolina's third power play of the evening.
"Now we've got to go home and follow this up", Hurricanes center Jeff Skinner said. Faulk tied it in the final minute of regulation with a hard blast from the circle that got past Mrazek.
Skinner spun around in the faceoff circle and fired a shot that deflected off Mike Green and fluttered under Mrazek's right arm.
