Archie Miller named Head Coach at Indiana

"I am honored to be the head coach at Indiana University", Miller said Saturday in a statement.

An under-the-radar assistant in college basketball is Wisconsin's LaMont Paris. Billy Donovan had said Saturday that he was ABSOLUTELY not in IN on Friday, and quite obviously three or four candidates who I had been told were absolute done deals did not get the job. If we don't, I'm going to be heartbroken every single year.

"A coach's son with the headiness and toughness to flourish as a 5'9 major college point guard", Indiana AD Fred Glass said in a team release, "Archie is a proven leader, proven victor, proven recruiter, and a proven player developer with a defense-first mentality that will help us win championships".

Other students are reacting to the coaching change, too. "IU is one of the greatest basketball programs and academic institutions in the country and I can not wait to get started", Miller said in a statement from the University. Jeff Goodman, also of ESPN, agreed. It was that obvious he would become a coaching star. The national championship banners that hang in the arena are a constant reminder of the standard at this hallowed basketball institution. "Archie can do that". If his teams don't get a quick bucket, they have a plan to work the ball around and attack the basket.

"I think it's a good hire". Dayton has always played well. Miller spent the past six seasons with the Dayton Flyers.

This season, Archie Miller led Dayton to its first-ever outright regular season A-10 Conference championship. His deepest run in the NCAA Tournament is an Elite 8 appearance in 2014.

Dayton was one of just 19 schools to reach the NCAA tournament in each of the last four seasons. Archie is only 38, while Sean is 48 years old.

Is Miller a sure thing? But I am hoping for a better season next year. The 29th IU basketball men's head coach had been chosen in the blink of an eye without much fanfare and hullabaloo. After two more years, 48 wins and one more tourney bid, Grant left for Alabama. All the basketball eminences asked about Indiana's savvy Miller hire said it was a great fit. Indiana-bred Steve Alford was considered a front-runner. But his overall record was similar to Crean's and the Pierre Pierce sexual assault incident at Iowa was problematic.

Xavier's Chris Mack also is believed to have been on Indiana's radar. Could he swap jobs with Miller? Miller, being a former college point guard at North Carolina State, has seen to that. Miller now has the backing to truly flourish. First, he has the commitments to compliance, wellness, and academics that we require at Indiana.

He did. Lee scored all those points at WKU, leading the Hilltoppers to the 2008 Sweet Sixteen - and he's finishing his ninth National Basketball Association season. And it's something Miller needs to clean up.

He's walking into a situation that's ripe for success; Tom Crean, fired after nine years, did not leave a bare cupboard here. "Having grown up in a family where basketball is so important, I'm sure in is the amplification of that", said Richmond coach Chris Mooney, who competed against Miller annually in the Atlantic 10. "Archie has the total package". Very simple guy. Loves family.

Don't let the newness of the hire make you assume IN has hit a home run, or the unfamiliarity assume a swing and a miss. "We all grew up with his father". We have new people coming in and we don't have anything to prove.

"And he's a basketball - that's what he does". He's not afraid. He's got a fight in him.

"Not super excited because I don't think it's the big name". It's not an easy job. None of these jobs are easy.
