Why Griezmann could leave this summer - Simeone

According to the Mirror, both Manchester United and Liverpool have identified Atletico Madrid's Jose Gimenez as a potential summer target and will battle it out with each other in order to land the Uruguayan worldwide this summer.

The Atletico Madrid forward is Jose Mourinho's top target this summer and could cost as much as £86m.

Griezmann who signed a new deal with Atletico in June a year ago, has pointed to Simeone as one of his reasons to stay with the club.

United are ready to beat a host of top European club to activate the £85.5million release clause in Griezmann's Atletico contract.

This would put the French attacker's move right up there in terms of football's all-time most expensive transfers, joining the likes of Gareth Bale (£85m from Tottenham to Real Madrid) and Griezmann's countryman Paul Pogba (£89m from Juventus to Manchester United).

The striker was named as the Player of the Tournament at Euro 2016 after helping France reach the final and he was recently voted as the third best player in the world behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

"I've already stated that I plan to stay".

In an interview with Spanish sports daily AS published on Thursday, Simeone explained his thought process and gave details of a lucrative offer to leave Atletico. He also said that his relationship with Conte did not start well because the former Italy boss knew that he wanted to leave the club.

"I got to the press room and had to go through the area where Real Madrid were celebrating and I felt a lot of pain, and I started to think that this was going to be a difficult year and it would be hard to motivate my players again", he said.

"I didn't do it with [Diego] Costa and with [Radamel] Falcao".

'Now I'm happy at Chelsea but if tomorrow the Chinese come and Chelsea tell me I have to go, I will no longer want to stay with them'.
