Cabbie arrested for 'stealing' John Legend's luggage at JFK Airport

Police identified Hilario from security footage and stopped him, retrieving Legend's bag.

It's unknown whether the thief knew he was stealing John Legend's suitcase.

The New York Daily News initially reported that a livery cab driver had stolen Legend's travel bag.

Legend and his camp noticed the bag was missing once he arrived at his hotel and called Delta Airlines and Port Authority police, sources said.

The bag, which is worth more than $3,000, had a pair of $25,000 Cartier panther head cufflinks along with clothing and personal items that belong to the Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe award-winning star. He was arrested on charges including grand larceny (theft) and possession of stolen property.

He's awaiting arraignment in Queens criminal court and faces up to seven years in jail if convicted.

Taking to Twitter on Friday (24.03.17), John quoted a tweet from one fan asking whether the thief had approached him and said: "This story is untrue".

"We use a trusted vehicle service and they did not rob me", Legend wrote.

"I would get a little nervous at first with some of the things she would say because I didn't know how people would react". The defendant also told the officer he had planned to take the bag to the lost and found, prosecutors said. The airport police caught the person who took it (on video) and retrieved my bag.

"One could say it's been handled", he declared.

John had just returned from a trip to Morocco with his wife Chrissy Teigen and their young daughter Luna, hairstylist Jet Atkin, and her husband Mike Rosenthal.
