Yanks' Didi Gregorius leaves WBC with shoulder injury

After appearing in a single-season career-high 155 regular season games for the playoff bound 2015 Yankees, Gregorius then made another 153 regular season appearances for the club last season.

Torres, 20, entered Monday hitting.444 in 27 spring training at-bats but is expected to start the season at Double-A Trenton.

Gregorius had an MRI in Los Angeles on Sunday.

"If he is going to be a DL, we've got a lot more to discuss than maybe what we thought we had to discuss", Girardi said.

Gregorius is among a handful of major league players to leave their WBC team because of injuries. All-Star catcher Salvador Perez of the Royals injured his knee in a home plate collision and also left the Venezuelan team. "That's always a concern of ours".

Tyler Wade and Ronald Torreyes are candidates to replace Gregorius at shortstop for the Yankees.

Gregorius batted.348 (8-for-23) with four doubles, a home run and eight RBIs in six games to help the Netherlands advance to the WBC semifinals.

"We saw the strides he took previous year offensively, and defensively what he did - that's a big loss", Girardi said.

Unfortunately, manager Joe Girardi said Gregorius has hematoma of the subcapsular muscle and will undergo more tests in Tampa tomorrow.

The 27-year-old shortstop is now in line to begin his third season as a member of the Yankees. Torreyes had a hit, drove in a run and scored one Monday against the Nationals. This spring he's batting.333.

"You look at a guy like Tyler Wade, who has played very well", Girardi said.

"Shoulder", Girardi said. "We'll keep our fingers crossed that it's not much". "I'll look at anybody".
