Snow and ice expected across the country tonight and tomorrow

Temperatures are expected to fall as low as -5C on Monday night in the Midlands, Wales, the north-east and Wales, with warnings that drivers could face risky icy conditions on the roads on Tuesday morning.

According to the national forecaster, showers of snow are expected during the night and on Tuesday morning.

Showers of snow are expected at times, particularly on hills, mountains and areas of high ground in the western half of the country.

Temperatures are expected to plummet close to or below freezing tonight as a cold weather front moves in across the country.

The warning was issued this morning and is valid until 12 noon tomorrow, Tuesday, March 21.

We can also expect snow on lower levels as the day goes on, with temperatures between +1 and -1 degrees.

The Met Office said the mercury was set to plunge below zero in the midlands, north-east England, Scotland and Wales, compared to a low of 2 degrees forecast in Russian capital Moscow. Ice, frost and lying snow in places at first.

A spokesperson for the RSA said: "Watch out for "black ice".

"It is almost transparent ice that often looks like a harmless puddle and can be easily overlooked".

"Clear your windows and mirrors before you set out, carry a screen scraper and de-icer", the authority suggests. Do not use hot water on the windscreen as it can crack the glass.

"Too much steering is bad and avoid harsh braking and harsh acceleration".

Later on in the week snow may also fall on high ground in the north of England. A light dusting of snow may occur very locally.
