Former UFC fighter War Machine aka Jon Koppenhaver, was found guilty on more than two-dozen charges in connection with an assault on his ex-girlfriend Christy Mackinday and her friend stemming from his arrest in 2014.
The brutal and disgusting beating of Mack (which has been met by laughs from Koppenhaver) was set off after the MMA fighter found her in bed with another man, Mack's friend Corey Thomas. Judge Elissa Cadish declared a mistrial on the two counts, allowing Koppenhaver to be tried on the charges at a future date.
He was convicted on numerous charges including sexual assault, kidnapping, coercion and battery.
Koppenhaver and porn star Christy Mack had been in a tumultuous relationship for years when it exploded on August 8, 2014.
"The defense attorney characterized Koppenhaver as a "raging bull" with brain injuries from his fighting career and emotions inflamed by the use of steroids and non-prescription stimulant and antidepressant drugs that combined could have caused mood swings and violence that Leiderman termed 'roid rage'".
The defence presented text messages between the pair discussing rape fantasies and argued this "charming back and forth" created a norm of consent that allowed Koppenhaver to sexually assault or rape Ms Mackinday as "he believed it was okay". He could face up to life in prison. Seriously. I watch a lot of movies. She also suffered a lacerated liver. She said she then ran from her house naked to a neighbors' home after hearing Koppenhaver rummaging through drawers in her kitchen for another knife after his first knife broke.
"I think what was important to Ms. Mackinday was that the jury believed her in regards to previous conduct that she never reported", prosecutor Jacqueline Bluth said (via the AP). The 35-year-old MMA veteran now awaits sentencing on June 5, where he faces a potential sentence of life in prison with no possibility of parole.
