Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was number five and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison was number seven. Last year, they estimated him to be worth upwards of $3.7 billion.

Donald Trump's wealth shrunk by $1 billion over the past year, according to an annual tally by Forbes magazine.

The 2017 list is longer than it has ever been before - Forbes estimates there are now 2,043 billionaires worldwide, up from 1,810 in 2016.

New Zealand's second richest man, at number 745, is 49-year-old PayPal co-founder Thiel who is worth US$2.7b.

Tech billionaire Bill Gates is meeting with President Donald Trump to discuss progress in programs for global health and development as well as domestic education.

Michael Bloomberg came in 10th with a net worth of $47.5 billion.

According to Forbes, the change in the total number of billionaires - up 233 since last year - was the biggest increase in 31 years. He debuted on the Forbes billionaires list in 2008, with an estimated net worth of US$5.1b ($7.2b). "In October 2016, at the time of the release of the 2016 Forbes 400 list of wealthiest Americans, Forbes valued Trump's net worth at $3.7 billion", Forbes said.

Forbes attributed the drop in Trump's fortune to a slowdown in the midtown Manhattan real estate market.

Due to his taking a civil service job that pays about $500,000 per year - and distancing himself from his corporate empire - U.S. President Donald Trump remained on the list and became the first sitting president to appear on it. It was followed by 319 in China, 114 in Germany and 101 in India. And unlike Trump, Gates says his goal is to give every last dollar of that away to charitable causes through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
