A former titleholder in Pride Fighting Championships, Silva secured his release from the UFC in 2016 and subsequently signed with Bellator MMA.
Always the little brother to the UFC, Bellator appears as though it is ready to begin asserting itself more in the world of MMA. Sonnen is a longtime veteran of the UFC, where he unsuccessfully challenged for the UFC Middleweight Title (twice) and the UFC Light Heavyweight Title.
"I think it's one of the better contracts out there, outside of being a UFC champion with pay-per-view points and stuff like that".
With several of the UFC stars wading in inactivity at the moment and with free agency seeming to trend in its favor, the time is now for Bellator to attempt to seize control of some of the PPV viewership.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission hit Sonnen with a two-year suspension, while Silva was slammed with a staggering lifetime ban.
In exchange, Reebok pays fighters a fee based on tenure with the UFC.
Just as interestingly, this is the latest instance of the WME-IMG-led UFC losing a high-level fighter.
The Bad Guy is invading Madison Square Garden and bringing the rest of Bellator's big names with him. Bader was the last man to defeat Davis when he claimed a split decision in January 2015. "I'm coming in there to wreck shop".
There is now no word on when Bader will debut or who he will challenge first. "It's refreshing, it's something new heading over to Bellator".
"On our side, we want to go in right away, and I think we can step in without people saying, 'Oh, you're jumping too many people, ' or this and that".
"Looking back, it's sad, but at the same time it's refreshing".
