Disney's live-action Mulan won't be a musical

Director Niki Caro confirmed that there are "no songs right now, much to horror of my children", in an interview with Moviefone.

"If you couldn't imagine it [like that], then we weren't doing it quite right, you know?"

Whatever the reason for the changes, it is pretty evident that the new Mulan movie is being geared to be presented in a much more serious tone than the animated version. "It will be extremely muscular and thrilling and entertaining and moving", the director spoke about her approach on the film. A non-musical, live action Mulan would also, as it was pointed out in the article, likely be a positive thing for the Chinese market. From Disney's reimagining of The Jungle Book, to the recent blockbuster, Beauty and the Beast, movies that recapture that decades-old creativity and magic with today's modern technology are taking over our box offices. Cinderella, on the other hand, was without its musical tunes of "A Wish Your Heart Makes" or "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo", because that just wasn't the direction the screenwriters wasn't to go with for that production.

"Beauty and the Beast" used the original tracks and even added three new ones. Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver came on board in 2015 to rewrite the spec by Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin. Whether that franchise deserves to use the "yeah, I fight like a girl - so what?" vibe after its questionable treatment of women in previous movies is an entirely different story. And I can't wait. The original film featured music by Matthew Wilder and lyrics by Broadway's David Zippel.

The new Mulan is set for release on November 2, 2018.

Let me just say, as a rational adult, I completely understand why Disney wouldn't want songs in the Mulan remake, and as a whole I think it's a smart idea.
