Bastian Schweinsteiger: Chicago Fire say they have signed Manchester United midfielder

Schweinsteiger, who was expected to leave Manchester United, after being frozen out by Jose Mourinho, has signed a one year deal with the MLS team, on a designated player contract that guarantees him $4.5 million in 2017.

Schweinsteiger returned to the fold last month but he's now agreed a move to the States.

"Through my conversations with [Fire general manager] Nelson Rodriguez and Pauno, I'm convinced by the club's vision and philosophy and I want to help them with this project".

"Manchester United is the only club that I would have left Bayern Munich for", he said, via Sky Sports.

The midfielder, who won the FIFA World Cup in 2014, captained Germany at the UEFA European Championships in 2016 and announced his retirement from global football after their exit at the hands of host France in the semifinals.

Rodriguez believes the club needs to rise to an worldwide standard and he hopes that the bank-breaking move for Schweinsteiger - and eight-time Bundesliga victor - will help in that regard. I will never forget my time with the club, but now it's time for a change!

He was banished to train with the club's youngsters before earning himself more senior privileges as the season went on. Schweinsteiger hasn't appeared in a Premier League game this season, and it's somewhat of a mystery how in-shape he'll be. As it turns out, that meeting built the bridge. Their lunch ended only when Schweinsteiger expressed concern that Paunovic would miss his flight that evening.

There is outside curiosity about Schweinsteiger's form because of his extended absence from United's starting lineup. Schweinsteiger was later recalled and made his first start of the season in United's EFL Cup win over West Ham United. China may be the go-to league for players to cash out, but MLS will always be down to overpay for washed-up old guys. "He sees (things) that nobody sees".
