The latest example is the company's roll-out Tuesday of a new feature tied to its Alexa voice-command program: ordering an item from Prime Now, the company's two-hour free delivery service.
Customer reviews, 1-Click shopping, personalized recommendations, Prime, Fulfillment by Amazon, AWS, Kindle Direct Publishing, Kindle, Fire tablets, Fire TV, Amazon Echo, and Alexa are some of the products and services pioneered by Amazon. The idea is that you can use Alexa when you are multitasking at home and too busy to get on the computer or your phone; or are in the middle of something else like a dinner party or sports event and do not want to turn to your screen; or are just not in the mood to do anything but demand something out loud. Spencer Millerberg, CEO of e-commerce data provider One Click Retail, said in an interview last month that voice shopping on Amazon was still "extremely small right now". Unfortunately, the service is now quite limited: You can only get spirits in Seattle, Washington, while beer and wine are available in Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio. Similar to the Echo, Alexa can now be accessed and given voice commands using the Tap from any corner of the room.
Prime Now and booze delivery, the two newest shopping experiences on Alexa that are going live today, are designed in the same vein. Alexa will recommend a product from those available and if you confirm, will add it to your order. If you're an Echo user, you might notice that Amazon sends you periodic emails about things you can ask Alexa to do, especially around the holidays. In order to shop with Alexa's Prime Now skill, you have to be an Amazon Prime subscriber with a default payment method and shipping address. When you're done adding items to your order Alexa sets the 2-hour delivery time. The voice assistant will also automatically pick the next available two-hour delivery slot.
Previously you could shop on Amazon with Alexa and use the Alexa Deals skill for daily specials. In the USA that includes unlimited access to award-winning movies and TV episodes with Prime Video; unlimited access to Prime Music, Audible Channels for Prime, Prime Reading, Prime Photos, Twitch Prime; early access to select Lightning Deals, one free pre-released book a month with Kindle First, and more.
