Ryan McBride of Derry City dies at the age of 27

Derry City Football Club has been stunned with the news of the tragic death of team captain, Ryan McBride.

It is understood he died at his home after going for a lie-down because he was feeling unwell.

Crowds of Derry City supporters gathered outside his home at Bluebell Hill Gardens last night in total shock.

The cause of death is as yet unknown.

The news sent shockwaves through the world of Irish football, and several prominent attendees left the FAI International Awards, which were held in Dublin, when the news came through.

He started playing for his hometown club in 2011 and featured alongside current Republic of Ireland and West Brom star James McClean.

Derry were due to play at home to Limerick in a re-arranged Premier Division game tomorrow night, but it is nearly certain it will not go ahead.

PFA Ireland said in a statement: "We are shocked to hear this evening the passing of our member and @derrycityfc Captain Ryan McBride". RIP Ryan McBride. Only 27 years old'.

Last year, popular striker Mark Farren died at the age of 33 after battling a brain tumour.
