Penélope Cruz To Play Donatella Versace In FX's 'Versace: American Crime Story'

With the anthology series' third iteration centering on the Versace fashion empire in the wake of the 1997 Miami Beach murder of founder Gianni Versace, Cruz will play the role of younger sister Donatella Versace, who subsequently became the face of the worldwide fashion house. And now we know who will play his sister and current vice president of The Versace Group, Donatella Versace: Penelope Cruz, reports Variety.

Ryan Murphy's stable of actors just got an A-list new entry: Academy Award victor Penélope Cruz. Meanwhile, Darren Criss of Glee fame was already cast in the role of Andrew Cunanan, the serial killer responsible for Gianni's murder.

The first installment of Murphy's American Crime Story revolved around the O.J. Simpson case and earned several Emmy awards including lead acting honors for Courtney B. Vance and Sarah Paulson and a supporting actor prize for Sterling K. Brown. The FX miniseries is based on the book Vulgar Favors by Maureen Orth. It will follow the second installment of the series, called Katrina, which will chronicle the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, also set to debut next year.

Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are set to serve as executive producers on Versace: American Crime Story which is being produced by Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions. Talk about a double whammy!

While Penélope Cruz represents quite the casting coup for Ryan Murphy's anthologies, it apparently came about after the originally considered pop star and American Horror Story: Hotel cast member Lady Gaga was too busy with touring. Though Pepe Cruz is a surprising, and wholly welcome, choice for Donatella, she's got some big, Gina Gershon-sized stilettoes to fill.
