It was a moment for the England midfielder to forget but team-mate Wijnaldum was quick to point out the Reds had plenty of let-offs themselves in the thrilling 1-1 draw.
Both sides are in contention for the top four places but sharing the spoils gave Manchester United and Arsenal renewed hope of finishing above them.
"He said, 'I'm sorry, I have to score it, ' but no-one blames him".
"The goalie was quite impressive for City today and maybe he made a good movement or whatever, or he [Lallana] was surprised that we played football like this because we hadn't 20 times before that". If he can't (explain the miss) - I thought it was because he worked so hard before.
James Milner converted a penalty to open the scoring for Liverpool six minutes into the second half on Sunday evening, reports Efe news agency. De Bruyne hit the post in the ensuing chaos but it was a squandered chance at the other end that sparked disbelief.
'And I do think the strikers should be taking responsibility for the chances they have been missing, because they certainly make enough'.
"We both created chances".
"Obviously he is one of the best, if not the best, player technical wise I've ever worked with".
Defeats to relegation-threatened Hull, Leicester and Swansea in the Premier League since the turn of the year, coupled with their FA Cup elimination at the hands of Championship side Wolves, has left many Liverpool supporters dreading those kinds of fixtures.
Wijnaldum knows that with greater consistency, the Reds should be higher.
"You can not imagine. It is one of the happiest days of my career as a manager".
The 26-year-old said: "I think it is a big frustration that we didn't deliver against the smaller teams". We were not 100 per cent concentrated.
Jurgen Klopp's side have developed a odd habit of turning up regularly for the so-called "big games" while they have struggled on several occasions against opposition that most would consider beatable.
"We have to win the next game to be in those kind of positions and fight until the end because it is going to be a really hard run". Out of the Champions League, playing against Liverpool, how we played with character, especially after these last few days, means so much to me.
