Ghana: Accident at popular Kintampo waterfalls kills 20 students

Twenty students in Ghana have died in a freak accident after trees fell while they were swimming at a popular tourist beauty spot, emergency officials said.

At least 18 persons have been confirmed dead after a huge tree uphill descended unto the dozens of revelers swimming beneath the fall.

Eighteen students died at the scene while two others died in hospital, Mr Anaglate said.

Some 22 critically injured people are also receiving treatment at the hospital.

Numerous revelers who were at the scene when the unfortunate incident occurred are believed to be students on excursion to the Waterfall.

"They were swimming in the river when there was a storm, a windy atmosphere uprooted some of the trees and they fell on some of them", he said.

An eyewitness told Starr News that most of the students belonged to Wenchi Senior High School in Ghana. We are down here with chainsaw machines cutting the trees in attempt to save the many others trapped under the water.

Mahama tweeted: "Very sad news of tragic deaths at the Kintampo waterfalls".

Former president John Mahama took to twitter to commiserate with the families of the victims of the Kintampo Waterfalls tragedy.
