MI is riding high after their first win in the NCAA Tournament, a 92-91 squeaker over Oklahoma State. They went 16 of 29 (55.2 percent) from beyond the arc - an astounding 11 of 15 in the second half. They have won six straight - five since a frightening plane mishap on the way to last week's Big Ten Tournament.
Michigan State (20-14) awakened after a Tom Izzo timeout and flipped the script, turning a double-digit deficit into a double-digit cushion in the blink of an eye. Oklahoma State's Jawun Evans bolted down the floor and drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer that made final margin just one-point.
The Wolverines led by seven with under a minute to go but the Cowboys wouldn't go away. If the Wolverines face the Cardinals, they'll need to guard better than they did against Oklahoma State, which had wide-open shots all day and finished shooting 54.7%.
MI has won six games in a row and just stormed through the Big Ten tournament as a No, 8 seed, the lowest ever to win the league event. Mustangs star Semi Ojeleye scored a game-high 24 points, but it wasn't enough to avoid the crushing upset. However, Evans returning next year would be huge for this team.
When the Cowboys cut the MI lead to 88-86 with 10 seconds remaining, Walton Jr. calmly drained both to make it a four-point game. The Wolverines move the ball with balletic grace around the perimeter, cut with élan and use that movement to create open three-point looks. They've scored 60 percent of the points during the season.
And it was a bigger challenge than most expected. Louisville led by double digits most of the rest of the game.
GREENVILLE, South Carolina - Jaylen Barford hit the go-ahead layup with 57.8 seconds left to help Arkansas hold off Seton Hall 77-71 on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. It will be broadcast nationally on the Big Ten Network at 8 p.m on Thursday, and will be the only action in college hockey on Thursday night at that time.
GREENVILLE, South Carolina - Grayson Allen had 21 points off five 3-pointers, Jayson Tatum had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and second-seeded Duke continued its flawless postseason with an 87-65 victory over Troy in the NCAA Tournament on Friday night to start the East Region.
MI needed every one of the six free throws it made in the last 29 seconds, which seemed like 29 minutes at times.
After Barford hit his free throws, Daryl Macon added another to make it a 75-71 game. The match-ups were determined by reseeding after the quarterfinal match-ups last weekend.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys shot almost 55 percent Friday, hit seven of 16 3-pointers, made 14 of 16 free throws, got 12 assists from their point guard, controlled the boards by an astounding 40-21 count and put up 91 points. Ellis averages 5.6 points per game and 1.2 assists on an average of 19.1 minutes per game.
With the Jayhawks holding a 40-point lead, Schneider and Young actually saw the court at the same time late, an experience Young said he was lucky to be a part of.
