It was a deflating conclusion to a season that began 20-2, the best start in school history.
At the time, there was the possibility that all five starters - seniors Jake Layman and Rasheed Sulaimon, redshirt junior Robert Carter Jr., sophomore Melo Trimble and freshman Diamond Stone - would leave to start their professional careers. He got a glimpse of just how powerful Maryland's young core could be on Thursday night, with Shenendehowa graduate Kevin Huerter scoring a team-high 19 points and fellow freshman Justin Jackson adding 14. Teammates and managers walked by to shake Trimble's hand, paying their respects one final time this season.
The second half started slow as Maryland got 5 quick points for a 10-0 run including to end the half up 40-35.
It had a little effect early on Thursday night. It was reminiscent of the droughts that had plagued this team during its six losses over the final six weeks of the season.
Walker-Kimbrough finished 12 for 18 from the floor and Jones hit 11 of 17 shots in her 23rd double-double of the season. I mean, no. I'm just going to let this one go ahead and rub off.
Trevon Bluiett led the way the Musketeers with 21points, four rebounds and four steals, helping Xavier earn a win in the tournament for the third straight season. Their most recent outing came against Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament, resulting in a loss. He's taking and making three-pointers (36 percent on the month), and he's had a couple of big rebounding nights, too.
Even as Maryland was utterly controlled on the boards 34-24, it found ways to compensate with its smaller lineup in other areas. Part of the reason for the Musketeers' lead was the fact that they hit six of their first 10 shots from long-range in the second half. "I don't think that we were as beat up as people think", Xavier coach Chris Mack said.
- Xavier G Trevon Bluiett picked up his fourth foul with 3:43 remaining in the second half when he was called for a charge, drawn by Maryland G Melo Trimble. After Bluiett scored an uncontested layup to push the lead back to 11, Huerter responded with a deep three-pointer with 6:33 left.
Here's how to watch Maryland vs. Xavier online. Jackson committed a turnover after Mack went back to the zone on the next possession.
