Demi Lovato on 5 years sober: 'It's been quite the journey'

Demi Lovato is celebrating her 1,827th day of being sober.

LOS ANGELES-It's hard not to have the utmost respect for someone as young as Demi Lovato who has gone from strength to strength and battled some really major personal demons. That dedication manifests itself, quite clearly, in Lovato's pursuit of happiness through sobriety. The 24-year-old believes it to be a new breakthrough as she seems to be quite proud of being clear-headed.

Demi, who's now dating MMA athlete Guilherme Vasconcelos, said that while she received treatment in 2010, it didn't take until two years later, as she was "triggered" amid the Hollywood partying set.

Admitting that she felt like relapsing at times, the singer said: 'So grateful. "So many ups and downs", she wrote alongside the image. "So many times I wanted to relapse but sat on my hands and begged God to relieve the obsession", she added. I can not fathom how long and winding a road Lovato has traveled in order to attain five years sober, healthy and happy.

'Feeling humbled and joyful today.

In 2015, Demi revealed that she was in a "great place" after dealing with her addiction to drugs and alcohol as well as bipolar and eating disorder.

But the early years of her career weren't so easy. "I couldn't go without 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes", she told the outlet. Perhaps the biggest hurdle she's had to overcome is her battle with bulimia, but she has used photoshoots and music as displays of strength and self-forgiveness.

Lovato's personal struggles have been well-documented.

"Prior to getting sober, I was one of those people who was like, I don't give a fuck, whatever".

"Like millions of Americans, I'm living with mental illness", Lovato said before the crowd in Philadelphia at the Democratic National Convention last summer.
