Thousands Come Out for St. Patrick's Day Parade In NYC

"We are all immigrants, or the descendants of immigrants, and you can not write the history of the United States, or write the history of NY, without writing the history of immigration", Dowling said at a pre-parade event last month. They will also be looking for minors in possession of alcohol, or bars, restaurants and retail shops selling alcohol to those under 21.

New York City will hold its 256th Saint Patrick's Day Parade on Friday morning and the city is working hard to prepare.

Half a million people are estimated to have attended last year's St. Patrick's parade in Montreal, the longest-running St. Patrick's Day parade in North America.

This year's parade honors Catholic Charities and the NY State Police.

The city's first St. Patrick's Day parade was on March 17, 1762. After many years of volunteering, Wilson was elected to the Executive Committee of the United Irish American Association.

The parade steps off on 44th St. then moves to 4th Ave. and heads to 79th St. There will be a holiday mass celebrated by Bishop Richard Malone at St. Joseph's Cathedral on Sunday beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The festivities get started at 11 a.m.

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny marched with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
