Paytm launches its digital wallet play in Canada

India's homegrown mobile payment and e-commerce start-up Paytm has expanded its services into Canada's market by launching Paytm Canada App on Thursday.

The most interesting feature listed on the site - and it's odd that Paytm avoids mentioning this in its announcement - is that the app allows for bill payments for bills and recharges in India using Canadian credit cards. Dubbed as Paytm Canada, the smartphone app is live on Google Play and iTunes, and allows users to pay their phone, cable, internet, water and electricity bills.

Pay Canadian Bills: Paytm Canada helps you make secure and seamless bill payments for thousands of service providers across Canada. In addition to this, users will also be able to pay their insurance and property taxes by using the new app.

With the foresight to launch operations in Canada, the company deployed a team of scientists that have been functioning out of Paytm Labs in Toronto since 2014. "We are confident that Canada will be a very successful market for us", says Harinder Takhar, CEO of Payatm labs. Toronto is the city for a company looking to locate in North America with our multisector strength and our exceptional diverse talent pool.

Paytm Labs, based out of Toronto, Canada, is the research and development division of Paytm. It has grown now grown to a 55 member team of Software, Data and Machine Learning engineers.

The company's worldwide foray comes close on the heels of some big-ticket investments from Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba and its subsidiary Ant Financial into its e-commerce business.
