Several foreigners have died in Goa over the past decade or so, including 15-year-old British schoolgirl Scarlett Keeling, whose bruised and semi-naked body was found in shallow water on a beach in 2008.
"The cause of death was compression of neck and the cerebral damage after she was hit on head with a beer bottle".
The Irish-Indian community has started a Facebook page called Justice for Danielle McLaughlin, calling for speedy action in the case to bring her culprit to justice at the earliest.
The 28-year-old British woman, who was found dead near a beach in South Goa on Tuesday, was raped before she was murdered, a police officer said on Thursday, citing her postmortem report. "Reports have confirmed that Danielle was raped before the murder", deputy superintendent Sammy Tavares of the Goan police told AFP. Bhagat had fought with the woman before killing her, according to The Indian Express.
Police have said a man has confessed to the rape and murder of Ms McLaughlin.
But the former Liverpool University student was found dead the next day, with police charging Vikat Bhagat, 24, with her murder. Bhagat has now been charged with rape, murder, robbery, and destroying evidence.
It may be recalled that on Wednesday, the police after subjecting the accused to rigorous interrogation, recovered the blood-stained clothes of the victim that were in a bag which was hidden near his residence at Bhagatwada. They then tracked the bars they had visited, where footage confirmed the accused had been with the victim, who had been holidaying in Goa since February 23. Police said she was seen playing Holi with locals in Canacona, hours before her corpse was found.
