Rihanna to Star in Amazon's New Music Drama 'Annette'

Rihanna made her feature film debut in critically panned 2012 movie Battleship, with the film's director Peter Berg later explaining why he chose to cast the singer as Petty Officer Cora "Weps" Raikes. And no, it is not about the inimitable Annette Bening. Bosses are now said to be looking for a new actress to take on the other female lead role. Rooney Mara was previously attached but had to step away from the project due to her commitment to another out-there-sounding musical, Son Lux (she'll play a Britney Spears-style character with songs provided by Sia in that one).

Now Rihanna and Adam are joining forces for Annette - the first English-language movie from legendary French director Leos Carax.

Amazon Studios just acquired North American distribution rights, according to the magazine. Rihanna, meanwhile, is appearing in this year's sci-fi thriller Valerian, next year's Ocean's Eight and on the final season of Bates Motel.

We know they've both got acting chops, and she's long since proven herself as a triple threat worthy of the stage and screen - but are Rihanna and Adam Driver seriously considering a foray into movie musical territory? While that film very memorably did not win Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards, it was a huge hit and a fan favorite.

So, it seems like Annette is a project that represents a big pull for many fans of all involved in the project.
