BYU finished second in the West Coast Conference regular season with a 13-5 record but lost to Saint Mary's in the league tournament semifinals. The Pac-12 awards its automatic bid to the WNIT to the first team in the standings that did not make the NCAA Tournament.
The 2016-17 campaign marks the Red Storm's fifth trip to the WNIT, with the program's last appearance coming in 2015. CSU has won all four outright; of the previous teams that had won at least three straight regular season titles, at least one was shared. The victor will face either Utah or UC Davis, who play Friday in Salt Lake City, in the second round scheduled for Saturday-Tuesday.
