So let's fast forward to Sunday, when the NCAA Tournament selection committee reached its verdict on the field of 68 teams in the Big Dance.
Hollis made his comments in a teleconference with reporters on Sunday night.
Among the teams not in this year's NCAA Tournament is Syracuse, and that did not sit well with ESPN's always opinionated Dick Vitale. But the three wins away from home (were) a significant consideration for Kansas State.
Wake Forest will be facing Kansas State in one of the play-in games come Tuesday, and I have to respectfully disagree with their inclusion in the NCAA tournament over SU. They played a similarly weak non-conference schedule as Syracuse, and while they had no bad losses, the best team they beat was Colorado State, which had an RPI of 66. Second round games will be played at some point between March 16 and 20, while quarterfinal games will be played between March 21 and 22.The semifinals are scheduled for March 28 and March 30 in Madison Square Garden.
"USC also had the situation with a student-athlete that was injured, " Hollis said. If you do, karma has a nasty way of coming back to bite you.
Syracuse (18-14, 10-8 Atlantic Coast) missed out on the NCAA Tournament for the first time when eligible in nine seasons and the ninth time overall in Jim Boeheim's 41 years as the Orange's head coach.
Syracuse this year had blowout losses to St. John's and Boston College, which went a combined 23-42 on the season. He was serving a 9-game suspension.
"It's not our schedule", Boeheim said. Well, Syracuse had more "given days" than any of its fellow bubble teams.
"Not a major conversation whatsoever, " he said, "but awareness".
"It comes down to we won just two road games and we obviously lost three games outside the Top 100". "Those were things that were relatively significant that didn't exist on this year's resume".
