UVM wins America East championship, headed to NCAA tournament

Down by nine points, 47-38 with 8:45 to go, UVM slowly chipped away and seized the advantage on Payton Henson's go-ahead points, breaking a 52-all tie with a three-point play.

Vermont, victor of two NCAA tournament games all-time, will learn its NCAA draw during the selection show Sunday at 5:30 p.m. on CBS.

Vermont's flawless America East basketball season is complete. Down by three with 0.3 left, Albany's David Nichols intentionally missed his second free throw and the ball was deflected out of bounds.

"We were down two weeks to Albany by nine in the second half and won by 12".

The championship is the sixth for Vermont, the most by any team in America East.

Vermont (29-5), which owns the longest current win streak in the country at 20 games, advances to the NCAA Tournament. Anthony Lamb had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double.

Travis Charles led the Great Danes with 16 points. Mostly, Vermont gets it done on the defensive end, limiting teams to less than 62 points a game to rank in the top 12 nationally (evidenced by a 56-53 win over Albany). "They're a veteran team, a good team, and I know they'll represent the America East Conference very well in the NCAA Tournament".

The America East championship is up for grabs when the Albany Great Danes visit the Vermont Catamounts in Saturday college basketball action.
