Trump offered Planned Parenthood continued funding if it stops abortions, report says

But he said there are other organizations - such as locally run pregnancy centers - that also provide the same health services as Planned Parenthood, but they don't get public funding.

Planned Parenthood and its advocates routinely claim that abortion constitutes only 3 percent of the services the organization provides, and that Planned Parenthood's core focus is on women's health issues such as cancer screening and STD testing. Trump also said a year ago Planned Parenthood serves many important functions and does "very good work for millions of women" but should no longer provide abortions.

The political arm of the non-profit, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, dumped more than $700,000 into federal races in 2016, and virtually all of it went to Democrats, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. The Hyde Amendment, which was signed into law in 1976, bars the use of taxpayer money to pay for abortions except in the cases of rape, incest, or danger to a pregnant women's health. The legislation also repeals the requirement that state Medicaid plans must provide "essential health benefits" that are now required, including pregnancy, maternity and newborn care for women.

"Planned Parenthood is proud to provide abortion - a necessary service that's as vital to our mission as birth control or cancer screenings", tweeted Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) March 6. "As a physician, I have worked in several countries outside the US and seen firsthand the devastation of cervical cancer when regular screening and treatment is not available", Nádas says. "For people who rely on Medicaid coverage - including people of color, people with low incomes, and those who live in rural areas - and already face obstacles to getting health care, removing Planned Parenthood as an option would put essential health services further out of reach". "Women's health doesn't need to suffer, just redirect the funds away from Planned Parenthood and all their problems".

A special House investigative panel recommended in a final report in January that Congress eliminate grants to Planned Parenthood and certify such federal funds go to comprehensive health-care providers that do not perform abortions.

In a 2015 study, which was published in the journal The Lancet, USCF researchers looked at 40 Planned Parenthood clinics across the country. "I have said continuously and repeatedly that I support the work of Planned Parenthood".

First, the plan to "defund" Planned Parenthood is an affront to women. California overcharged the federal government for the services, some which HHS found weren't even related to family planning.

Planned Parenthood clinics also received state dollars as part of a network of providers that receive financial support through the Department of Public Health's family planning program. "It's not just women's health they support but men's health too", said Elaine Emiling, a 74-year-old retired teacher and urban planner from Silver Spring, Md.

Planned Parenthood's motto is "Care, No Matter What", but Trevino and Thayer contend that was certainly not the reality.
