Americans Now Prefer Bottled Water to Soda

"As some consumers are becoming wary of artificial sweeteners, they are abandoning diet as well as regular soda and instead are switching to bottled water".

This change was a long overdue as the sugary beverages were affecting heath by triggering obesity- and diabetes-related problems. Soda generated $39.5 billion, and bottled water came in at $21.3 billion, the Wall Street Journal reports. The two organisations said that last year marked the 11th consecutive year of volume declines for soft drinks in the US.

"Bottled water effectively reshaped the beverage marketplace", Michael C. Bellas, CEO of Beverage Marketing Corp., stated in a press release.

On a basis of per capita, the intake of bottled water reached 39 gallons, whereas carbonated soft drinks consumption reduced to 38.5 gallons. He also added that bottled water has transformed the market for beverages.

In the water revenue, 26% went to soda giants Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc., which sell Dasani and Aquafina brands, respectively.

Other industry trackers define drink categories differently, so may see the cross at different times. The reverse is true for another tracker, Beverage Digest, which projects bottled water will surpass soda this year.

Pepsi even bought a 30-second Super Bowl ad to debut it's new premium bottled water brand, "LIFEWTR".

In a latest report, bottled water became the largest beverage category by volume in 2016 in the USA, surpassing sodas.
