Suspension for Shiv Sena activists who resorted to moral policing in Kochi

The decision came after a group of Shiv Sena activists attacked young couples at Marine Drive and chased them away from the area in an act of moral policing. The cops could have prevented the activists numbering fewer than two dozen from imposing their writ on the people. It was a march where the activities held banners which said, "Stop crime against girls" while one of the banners read,"love under umbrellas must be stopped".

"The police did not act when it happened". "The inaction can not be justified in any modern and civilised society".

Calling the incident a shame for Kerala, the Chief Minister said the attackers would be charged and punished. The Congress and its student wing KSU have also called for protest against Sena's "moral policing". "The police remaining as mute witnesses is not acceptable", he said.

Later, the police arrested six Shiv Sainiks, T.R. Devan, K.K. Biju, K.Y. Kunjumon, T.R. Lenis, K.U. Ratheesh and A.V. Vineesh, for unlawful assembly, threatening youths and obstructing police personnel.

The local police had not taken any preventive action even though the Sena members had announced their plan to take to the streets. City police commissioner M.P. Dinesh said assistant commissioner of police, special branch, had been directed to probe the alleged lapses on the part of the police. "Action should be initiated against the guilty police officials".

According to some media reports, the group had not taken permission to hold the protest at Marine Drive on Wednesday. DYFI members are organizing an event named "Sneha irippu" or "Love sitting" at Marine Drive where in women and men of the party will be seen sitting at Marine Drive.
