The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch from 2:25 p.m. until 10 p.m. today for Wyandotte County.
The encouraged drills are scheduled in observance of Texas Severe Weather Awareness Week, created to bring attention to the threats posed by weather hazards in an attempt to reduce the loss of life, injury and property damage, according to a statement by the city.
Geoff Grochocinski, meteorologist for the NWS office in Duluth, said severe weather producing tornadoes in early March was "highly unusual".
Morgan said the week is also a good time to sit down with your family and review your home emergency plan. Before Monday, the earliest in the year a twister had struck Minnesota was nearly two weeks later - on March 18, 1968, the National Weather Service said.
Patti Thompson, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, said many people might have missed the warnings because they don't have a weather radio or couldn't hear the sirens.
"When the weather looks threatening, we have tendency to go stand on the porch and see if we can spot a tornado", said Morgan.
"Severe thunderstorms involve a variety of weather conditions such as hail, flash floods and tornadoes".
Use this opportunity to practice your plans and procedures in the event of a tornado.
Children were taken out of their classrooms away from windows and taught to shelter in the hallways.
Advance warning is critical, and one of the best ways to get emergency information is with an emergency alert radio.
"We're about to hit peak severe storm season and we need to be ready for anything Mother Nature sends our way", Governor Cooper said in a press release.
"Winter finished out, meteorological winter (December, January, February) finished out 5.6 degrees above normal", Boulay said. "In 2015, there were 27 fatalities in flooding and zero in tornadoes".
With spring in sight and many residents eager for sun-filled days and budding flowers, local and state officials remind everyone to prepare for severe weather. During the same time, 697 severe thunderstorm warnings were issued.
